TRANQUIL PERSPECTIVES
Inspired by Japanese design principles, this Sphere Landscape Design garden in Burnside’s Adelaide foothills brings a sense of calm and tranquillity to its owners. A tapestry of textures and movement in the planting enhances its meditative quality, while stone elements add depth and structure to what is still a young garden.
The centrepiece of the space is a striking bench seat, where craft and tradition intersect. Carey Gully stone forms its sturdy base, while a solid Cypress Pine slab has been preserved using the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, a method of charring wood to create a weather-resistant, dramatically textured finish. This distinctive feature settles effortlessly into its surroundings, its aged character complementing the timeless feel of the garden.
This is a landscape that invites curiosity, contrasts of light and shadow, rough and smooth, movement and stillness, all working together to create an immersive, layered experience. It can be enjoyed as a series of composed scenes, each with its own sense of balance, or explored more deeply, revealing intricate details in the textures, materials, and plantings that reward a closer look.
